COTUL Hosts Transformative Workshop on Emerging Technologies in Library and Information Services at MUCE
The Consortium of Tanzania University and Research Libraries (COTUL) has taken a bold step in revolutionising the library and information profession by organising a national training workshop on “Utilising Emerging Technologies for Library and Information Services in the Digital Age.” The workshop is taking place from 5th to 9th May 2025 at MUCE in Iringa.
The event was officially opened by the Guest of Honour, Prof. Method Samwel Semiono, the Principal of MUCE, represented by Prof. Jacquiline Amani Moshi, the Deputy Principal – Planning, Finance and Administration. In her opening remarks, Prof. Moshi emphasised the importance of leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in the library sector. She explained that AI, a field of computer science that enables machines to perform tasks requiring human intelligence, holds immense potential to transform library operations. Applications of AI in libraries include automated cataloguing, enhanced search and discovery, information repackaging, reference management, and intelligent research assistance.
Prof. Moshi further urged information professionals to master these technologies so they can not only improve their services but also guide library users in applying them ethically—thus promoting academic integrity and responsible use.
The workshop is highly participatory and practice-oriented, with participants using their laptops to explore a variety of AI tools. The training employs an interactive approach featuring lectures, group discussions, hands-on sessions, peer learning, and real-world case studies. These sessions aim to redefine the roles of library professionals by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to integrate AI into modern library services.
Participants are learning to:
Understand the role of emerging technologies in library service delivery
Gain proficiency in selected AI tools relevant to library functions
Develop strategic plans for implementing AI-driven services in their institutions
This timely initiative has brought together professionals from across Tanzania and neighboring countries—people united by their passion for knowledge and innovation. It has created a vibrant platform for collaboration, networking, and mutual growth among library and information professionals.
The enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment shown by participants throughout the sessions have been commendable. Their willingness to adapt, learn, and share their expertise is not only enriching the workshop experience but also paving the way for the transformation of libraries into digitally empowered knowledge hubs.
This landmark workshop underscores COTUL’s dedication to building the capacity of information professionals and advancing library services in the digital era.
