Biography

Dr. Philpo John began to work with Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) in 2010 after he was retained as a Tutorial Assistant in the Department of Languages and Literature from the 1st MUCE graduation ceremony held on 12th December 2009. In 2010, I was awarded a scholarship by Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to pursue Master of Arts in Linguistics (M.A. Linguistics) at the University of Dar es Salaam which I successfully completed in 2012. In same year (2012), I was promoted to the rank of Assistant Lecturer after earning my M.A (Linguistics) degree with honours. In 2015, I joined the University of Dar es Salaam to pursue PhD in Language Education through Transformation in Language Education and Development (TRANSLED) project funded by NORHED/NORAD the programme which I completed in 2020. After my PhD graduation in July 2020, I was promoted to the rank of Lecturer of Language Teaching and Language-in-education at MUCE. Currently, I supervise M.A. and Ph.D. students who are interested in areas of Language Teaching; Literacy learning in childhood education; Multilingualism, Language rights, Language policy; Language ecology, Language teacher education, and Language-in-education. Dr. John has adequate knowledge and skills in the following:

  1. Classroom manage and lesson preparations;
  2. Planning, defining and assessing the set goals for implementation; 
  3. Writing educational contents; design academic courses, providing mentorship, and career development and coaching;
  4. Computer Ms-word, PowerPoint, zoom, excel and internet surfing; 
  5. Editing and translation skills in Kiswahili and English languages;
  6. Project designing and implementation; and
  7. In Qualitative data analysis skills and design.

John has been either engaged or co-commissioned to carry out various projects with TEN/MET, LANES/GPE through MoEST, Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE), TWAWEZA, EQUIP-T:ELT, UDSM and MUCE.
