The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has strengthened its reputation as a leader in research and innovation following the grant of a national patent by the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) for bamboo-based bioethanol technology. Developed at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) of UDSM, the innovationโled by Dr. Jovine Kamuhabawa Emmanuel, Dr. Lewis Atugonza Mtashobya, and MSc student Mr. Osia Peter Mwanyesyaโintroduces an eco-friendly method of producing bioethanol from bamboo juice using natural additives, eliminating costly chemicals while promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Receiving Application No. TZ/P/2026/000014, the patent highlights UDSMโs commitment to transforming research into real-world impact. MUCE Principal, Prof. Method Samwel Semiono, alongside Deputy Principal Prof. Deusdedit A. Rwehumbiza and UDSM Intellectual Property (IP) Manager, Dr. Judith Jacob Iddy, emphasized its role in advancing green energy, industrial development, and local livelihoods. The breakthrough reinforces UDSMโs position as a hub for innovation, unlocking opportunities in renewable energy and commercialization.
