General Information

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest faculty in the College comprised of two departments, one unit and one centre: Some of the departments house several sections. The following are the two departments and one unit:

Department of History, Political Science and Development Studies - This department offers History, Archiology, Development Studies, Political Science and Public Administration courses.
Department of Geography and Economics - This department offers geography courses both physical and human geography, Economics, Commerce and Accounts courses.
Languages and Literature Unit - This department offers Linguistics, Literature, French, Communication Skills, Kiswahili Isimu and Kiswahili fasihi courses.

Department of History, Political Science and Development Studies has three sections which are:

The faculty also hosts Confusious Centre which is dealing with Chinese language and culture.

Academic and Professional Programmes offered

The faculty is geared towards improving teaching and learning through the specified courses, to both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Currently the faculty offers Bachelor of Arts with Education and Master of Arts with Education in Geography stream. The faculty also offers College wide courses of Development Studies and Communication Skills to other faculties.

On top of that the faculty is also offering short courses in:

Kiswahili for foreigners (beginners, Intermediate and advanced level).
English (beginners, Intermediate and advanced level).
French (beginners, Intermediate and advanced level).
Chinese Languages (beginners, Intermediate and advanced level).
GIS (Geographical Information System).
EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment).

These courses help individuals for proper communication and business dealing as well as professional development. Similarly the faculty offers consultancies in the wide range of specialisation including but not limited to translation into four different international languages Kiswahili, French, English and Chinese.

The faculty under-takes researches in different fields of study in respective departments and across the disciplines. Its volume and quality of publications grow day after day.

Department of History, Political Science and Development Studies

Introduction

The Department of History, Political Science and Development Studies offer History, Archaeology, Development Studies, Political Science and Public Administration courses. In line with the broader mission of the Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE), the department enable students to reach their highest potential through realizing the College Mission. The Department is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery. The department has three sections namely: History, Political Science and Development Studies.

History Section

The section offers a wide variety of courses which provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge that covers major geographic area in relation to time. The academic programmes in the history section help students to understand historical issues and develop critical thinking skills can be translated into all areas of life, and prepare students for a variety of careers.

Political Science Section

Political science section offers courses that help students to understand political ideas, ideologies, institutions, policies, processes, classes, government, diplomacy and democracy.

Development Studies Section

Development studies is a distinct field of multidisciplinary study, research and policy analysis directed at understanding the processes and imperatives of national, regional, community and global transformation. The core vision of the section is to produce students with capacities (skills, knowledge, expertise etc) that can contribute effectively to scientific enquiry in the nature, causes and impact of global social, economic, political, cultural and technological changes on Third World Development.

Department of Geography and Economics

Introduction

Department of Geography and Economics is among the academic departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE). Among others, the department is responsible for managing and administering the college’s core functions – teaching, research and public services for achieving MUCE’s envisaged mission and vision.

The department is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery in undergraduate and postgraduate studies. With a diverse and specialised area of competency among course instructors, the department offers courses in human and physical geography, and microeconomics and macroeconomics.

The department is also well equipped with teaching and learning facilities to offer practical oriented knowledge and skills. The available facilities include Geographical Information System laboratory, Geographical Positioning Systems, Automatic Weather Station, Total Station, and Automatic Level Machine.

Department of Languages and Literature

Introduction

Language and literature is one of the academic Units in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) which, among others, is responsible for managing and administering the college’s core functions – teaching, research and public services for achieving MUCE’s envisaged mission and vision. The unit is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery. The unit also emphasizes the inseparability of theoretical and empirical work, and the interrelatedness of diachronic and synchronic approaches to the study of language. This Unit is an amalgamation of three (3) Sections, namely: Foreign Languages and Linguistics, Kiswahili and Literature. It also hosts Confucius Centre which is a sub-unit which offers Chinese language courses.

The unit currently offers courses in Linguistics, Literature and Languages both local and international. Apart from regular classes, the unit also offers languages short courses for the needy people. Short courses which are offered by the unit are:

Kiswahili for foreigners (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels).
English (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels).
French (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels).
Chinese (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels).

These courses, except Kiswahili for foreigners, are taught in evening basis and during students’ long holidays.

Facts

Fact 1

(MUCE) is named after the legendary Chief Mkwawa, who was a prominent historical figure in Tanzania. Chief Mkwawa played a significant role in the resistance against German colonial rule in the late 19th century.

Fact 2

MUCE is known for its intriguing underground tunnels. These tunnels are remnants of the German colonial era and were primarily used as a means of transportation and escape during times of conflict.
