MUCE's Visit to Patandi Teachers College to Experience on the Current Situation Surrounding Inclusive Education at MUCE
Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE), through its Special Needs Education Unit, paid a visit to Patandi Teachers College on 10th May 2024, not only to share its knowledge, but also engage in a mutual learning process to foster a collaborative platform for shared learning and growth.
During the visit the team from MUCE shared its experience on the current situation surrounding inclusive education at MUCE while the team from Patandi Teachers College led by Mr. Lucian Segeselo shared their own experience of 27 years and how far they have come in this area and their future prospects. In the discussions, they explained how they managed to keep a near-perfect synergy between the students with disabilities and the ones without disabilities and how they were able to strike a balance between the two.
Mr. Segeselo said, “We encourage students to assist each other in conducting various activities such as learning in class, encouraging team teaching during teaching practice, joint seminars for both students with disabilities and students without disabilities are given in order to make them aware on how to assist one another and discourage segregation and alienation.”
This visit opened up many opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions. They plan to work together on research about inclusive education, build capacity, organize events, and provide public services like screening and identifying people with disabilities, as well as continuously assessing students with disabilities.
