Enhancing Guidance and Counseling Skills to Foster a Supportive and Inclusive Learning Environment

On March 13, 2024, our College hosted an inspiring seminar dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial guidance and counseling services available to our students and staff. This enlightening event was generously funded by the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project.

The seminar served as a dynamic platform for administrative staff from various departments to gather and enhance their understanding and expertise in several key areas, including:

  • The core principles of guidance and counseling.

  • Effective practices for delivering guidance and counseling services.

  • The essential attributes, ethics, and professionalism required in counseling.

  • Techniques for identifying and assisting clients in need of guidance and counseling.

  • Proper follow-up procedures after counseling sessions.

Dr. Chriss Mauki, a distinguished Lecturer from the University of Dar es Salaam’s School of Education, Department of Educational Psychology and Curriculum, captivated the audience with his insights on counseling methods, skills, and theories. He also shared valuable guidance and counseling strategies tailored for diverse populations.

Adding to the depth of the seminar, Mr. Heriel Mfangavo, an Assistant Lecturer from the University of Dodoma’s School of Medicine, Department of Mental Health and Psychiatry, provided invaluable knowledge on identifying clients' issues and the ethical considerations vital to effective counseling practices.

Similarly, on 13th April 2024, MUCE organized a seminar aimed at familiarizing students with the roles and importance of the newly established Counseling Unit. The introduction of this Unit signifies a proactive approach towards nurturing the holistic development of students, underscoring the College’s dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. By addressing students' psychological and emotional needs, MUCE aims to create a conducive environment for learning and personal development. "We recognize that academic success is closely intertwined with mental well-being. Our goal is to foster a supportive community where students feel empowered to seek help when they need it," stated Dr. Orestes Kapinga, MUCE Acting Deputy Principal – Academic, Research and Consultancy.
